He Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzonhas sent a letter this Wednesday to the presidents of the 25 football clubs of First y Second division who have signed advertising contracts for the next few years with betting companies to warn them that they must terminate at the end of the season.

So they have advanced to EFE sources close to the department headed by Garzón, who has also informed them in the letter that his Ministry will take the Minister council in the next few days the royal decree that will regulate the advertising of the game.

sources of council of state have also pointed to EFE that this advisory body of the Government delivered its opinion on the royal decree on the 20th.

And, according to Consumer sources, the Council of State has set August 30 as the date for the entry into force of the ban on current sponsorships, since an immediate cancellation with the 2020/2021 season already underway could lead to the bankruptcy of various sports projects.

Garzón’s letter comes after several of the clubs requested moratoriums of up to three years -similar to those for the entry into force of tobacco advertising- in order to continue displaying their sponsorships.

Twenty-five clubs have received the letter, but the rest of the First and Second Division entities have also been sent another informative letter, according to the same sources.

The reasons for the ban

Minister Garzón already addressed the issue again at the beginning of October on television. “We are stipulating the reasonable time but it will be very short,” he then explained about the deadlines they are covering, since the season has started and the clubs have contracts to fulfill, at least, during this campaign. In turn, Garzón announced that the clubs have already been notified and appealed to the social responsibility of sports entities so that they set a good example with the youngest.

The federal coordinator of United Left He also emphasized that this sector of society is the one that suffers the most from the negative consequences of betting and that is why they want to apply these measures as soon as possible. “We are waiting for the last phase of the limitation in a Royal Decree and we will address the issue comprehensively,” he declared, making it clear that this problem “is going to end.” He is now closer to achieving it.
