WLD cryptocurrency fell on news of Sam Altman, creator of ChatGPT, being fired as CEO of OpenAI. This event had a direct impact on the value of Worldcoin’s WLD token, which suffered a sharp drop, highlighting the interconnection between the spheres of technology and the digital financial market.

After the news, Worldcoin’s WLD token was traded close to US$1.84, showing a devaluation of more than 14%. This decline in value is a reflection of the uncertainty generated by the dismissal of Altman, an influential name in the world of cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence. At the time of publication, the price of WLD was listed at US$1.99, down 4% in the last 24 hours.

Sam Altman, who co-founded Worldcoin with Max Novendstern and Alex Blania in 2019, faced the decision to step down by OpenAI’s board of directors, with accusations of a lack of clear and frank communication, directly impacting his responsibilities as CEO.

The dismissal was officially announced by OpenAI on Friday afternoon (17). The company’s statement cited a lack of sincerity in Altman’s communications with the board as the main reason for the decision. “Mr. Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, which hindered his ability to fulfill his responsibilities,” was OpenAI’s statement. In response to this change, Mira Murati was appointed as interim CEO, with the company already searching for a new permanent leader.

The OpenAI communications team, when contacted by Livecoins, chose not to issue additional comments beyond those already published on their blog. This news was a surprise not only for the market, but also for OpenAI employees themselves, according to internal sources.

In a post on X (Twitter), Sam Altman reflected on his time at OpenAI, stating: “I loved my time at OpenAI. It was transformative for me personally and, I hope, for the world.” He also described the experience of his dismissal as “strange in many ways. But an unexpected surprise.”

Altman’s departure from OpenAI coincides with a notable drop in the value of Worldcoin. Immediately after the news was released, the price of WLD fell 10%, reaching values below US$2. This scenario highlights the volatility of the cryptocurrency market and the impact of influential leaders.

Launched this year, Worldcoin drew attention for its rapid adoption and initial increase in the token’s price, reaching US$2.5 after its launch in July. The project, however, faces challenges, including regulatory and operational resistance in several countries.

Amid these challenges and uncertainties, Worldcoin has not yet commented on Sam Altman’s continuity in the project.
