Despite legal problems, Worldcoin reaches 10 million registered iris

Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project from the creator of ChatGPT, San Altman, announced on Thursday (11) that it reached the mark of 10 million users on its app.

The app, first launched in May 2023, had already been downloaded 4 million times by November of the same year. Growth to 10 million users in more than 160 countries, with 2 million daily active users and more than 70 million total wallet transactions, represents a significant increase in usage despite restrictions in several countries around the world, such as Portugal, Spain , between others.

According to data from CoinGecko, in recent weeks, the World App has maintained an average of 7.1 transactions per second. This places the application among the main dApps on the market, according to data from CoinGecko.

“We are obviously excited about the milestone, but even more so about the real impact it represents. Many projects in the community have worked for years on the foundational blocks of Ethereum. The World App shows what is possible when you make these tools simple, charming and useful for everyday life”, said Tiago Sada, Head of Product at TFH, responsible for developing the World App.

Worldcoin continues to grow

Worldcoin was designed as a digital identity verification tool using blockchain for secure iris scans. However, the scheme has sparked privacy debates due to the nature of its verification devices, known as “Orbs”.

The project faced a temporary setback when Sam Altman left OpenAI in November 2023. However, it managed to recover when he returned, accompanied by significant changes to the OpenAI board.

OpenAI’s introduction of Sora, a text-to-video model capable of generating videos of up to 60 seconds with complex scenes and emotions, showcases advanced technological capabilities. Although available to a limited audience, its launch contributed to Worldcoin’s recent success.

Blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain reported that Alameda Research owns approximately 19% of Worldcoin’s circulating supply. Sam Bankman-Fried’s company acquired 25 million WLD tokens when the price was much lower and before the FTX group went bankrupt.
