Zhao, known as CZ, is pushing to return to the UAE before his scheduled sentencing in February 2024, defying objections from the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
The conflict gained prominence after Zhao’s lawyers submitted a lawsuit on November 23, defending his right to return to the UAE. This move comes amid DOJ concerns about CZ’s flight risk and a substantial $175 million bond.

In addition to a $175 million bond, he is banned from holding an executive role at Binance but still retains his majority stake. It is important to note that the settlement with the DOJ does not influence Binance’s ongoing case with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), but it does resolve outstanding issues with the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.
