In a move that seems straight out of a work of science fiction, BitMEX, a prominent cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, announced an extraordinary feat: sending 1 Bitcoin (BTC) to the Moon. This historic event is scheduled for January 8 at 12:18 UTC, departing Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida.

Bitcoin, which will be marked with a unique public address (1MoonBTCixFH3XTrWRCbMpK23o74nQrA1Q). The respective private key is scheduled to land on the lunar surface on February 23, 2024. This initiative is not only symbolic, but also represents a milestone in the intersection between space technology and cryptocurrencies.

BTC will have a lunar presence in February 2024 with a unique address

The transportation of this lunar BTC takes place using the Vulcan rocket, a United Launch Alliance (ULA) project. The payload, a cold wallet weighing 43 g and carrying precious BTC, will be integrated with Peregrine-1, a commercial lunar lander. Thus, this step represents a notable advance in commercial space exploration, opening new horizons for practical and symbolic applications of blockchain technology in space.

BitMEX’s Bitcoin is just one of 201 payloads destined for the Moon, including materials from governments, companies, universities and part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. This mission is significant as it marks the West’s first soft landing on the Moon since NASA’s legendary Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

The mission, a collaboration between BitMEX, Astrobotic, Bitcoin Magazine and Oxcart Assembly, is not the only one to transport cryptocurrencies into space. There is also the DOGE-1 mission, which is planned for February 2024. It will receive approval from the NTIA and the FCC, an important milestone in Dogecoin’s ambitious journey to the Moon.

These missions are not only a testament to the growing fusion between space technology and cryptocurrencies, but they also symbolize a new chapter in human history, where financial innovation and space exploration meet. For cryptocurrency and space enthusiasts, this is a time to celebrate and imagine the possibilities the future holds.
